Know the safest country in the world

The Institute for Economics and Peace carries out an annual ranking of which countries in the world are the safest, called the Global Peace Index.

That’s because crime there is practically nonexistent. In 2017, 4 homicides were recorded. And the last time there was a record of crime like that, was in 2018.

The country also has no army and even the police are not armed in the streets. The chain is always empty.

Including the Instagram of the police of the capital Reykjavik, it is an attraction and a lesson in civics.

Take the opportunity to check out a guide below everything you can know in this picturesque country.

The best way to get to know Iceland is, without a doubt, on a road trip on the Ring Road, also known as Route 1. For those unfamiliar, Ring Road is a circular road, about 1,332 km, which takes the traveler to the main attractions of the island.

When to go

The number of days will actually depend on the time of year (summer days are longer and winter days are shorter) and your disposition. But to go through it with peace of mind, it will take 7 to 10 days.

The high season runs from June to August (summer) when you will witness the midnight sun.

1) Walk on the glacier

Iceland is indeed the land of ice. There you will find icebergs and glaciers even during the summer.

The tip is to visit the Vatnajökull National Park and embark on a guided hike on the Vatnajökull Glacier.

2) Climb a volcano

In addition to glaciers, Iceland is also the land of volcanoes, as it is located in the area where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet.

For diving lovers, it is even possible to dive in Silfra, a fissure between these plates, located in the Thingvellir National Park, which is filled with crystal clear waters.

For hiking lovers, our tip is to hike over the Kerið volcanic crater, which has green water in the center, and over the Hverfjall crater, in the Lake Myvatn region.

3) Relax in a natural pool of geothermal water

Due to the high geothermal activity, Iceland has some regions that offer baths in natural pools, with temperatures that can reach 40 ºC.

A super practical tip is to visit, on the day of arrival or departure from the country, the Blue Lagoon pools. That’s because this beautiful thermal spa is located just 22 km from Iceland’s main airport (Keflavik) and has bathrooms with shower and hairdryer!

4) See the Northern Lights

One of the most enchanting reasons for tourists to visit this incredible country is the possibility of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Iceland is located in the area known as the “aurora belt”, which is the region where this impressive natural phenomenon most commonly occurs.

It is good to say, however, that there are several factors necessary for the Northern Lights to appear in full force. Among them are the activity of the solar winds, the amount of clouds, the clarity of the sky and the latitude.

If your intention is to see the northern lights know that the best months are March and September.
